Former Sakai Lighthouse as a Historic Site
The Old Sakai Lighthouse is the oldest existing wooden-style lighthouse. It was completed in 1878 and was in use until 1968. In 1947, it was designated as a national cultural property. Repair work was completed in 2007. Sakai’s lighthouse was built in 1689 by merchants from Sakai, and later changed locations until it reached the Western-style lighthouse built in the 10th year of the Meiji era. At that time, oil lamps were used, and light is said to have reached 18 kilometers away. In addition, due to the land reclamation of the critical industrial zone in Sakai, etc., he could no longer fulfill its role, and was abolished in 1968, ending its 90-year history.
