滋賀県の近江八幡市はいつ行っても楽しめる。歴史的には、織田信長とか豊臣秀吉が住んでた場所の近く、安土は信長の安土城があった場所。また、琵琶湖からくる八幡界隈の水路は、すごく情緒がある、見栄えがある。むかしは興味本位で　このへんの赤い色のこんにゃくが珍しく　食べたという記憶があることぐらい。今回は町を存分に探索です。

近江兄弟社って？

今回は、近江兄弟社の創業者であるヴォーリズのお宅訪問。近江兄弟社というのは　メンソレータムが有名なので　それぐらいしかわからなく　近江兄弟社も、単に滋賀のなかのいい兄弟が起こした会社だとぐらいしか思っていなかった。ところが、彼のお宅を訪問し、ビデオを見、説明をよく聞いたところ　近江兄弟社の創業者で　名前も　いわゆる　ワーナーブラザーズ的な、彼はキリスト教の信者で　人類みな兄弟的な発想で　近江兄弟社と名前を付けたということがわかった。本日の収穫、またひとつ　偉くなった。

また、ヴォーリズさんは、アメリカの建築家で　たくさんの建築物を作っている。特に学校や病院、結構特徴があるので　それはヴォーリズ建築として有名らしい。また、近江兄弟社は、メンソレータム　建築設計、海外のピアノはじめ　商品の貿易を根幹事業にしている。彼の収益は、学校を作ったり、地域に役立つものを　キリスト教の信念に基づき　いろんなものに投資している。また、彼は戦後は敗戦国日本とマッカーサー元帥との交渉の間にもたっている。

Omihachiman City in Shiga Prefecture is always fun to visit. Historically, it is near the place where Oda Nobunaga and Toyotomi Hideyoshi lived, and Azuchi is the place where Nobunaga’s Azuchi Castle was located. Also, the waterway in the Yawata neighborhood that comes from Lake Biwa has a very atmospheric and beautiful appearance. This time, we visited the home of Vories, the founder of Omi Brothers. Mr. Vories of America is famous as an architect.

Mr. Vories is an American architect who has created many buildings. Schools and hospitals, in particular, are quite distinctive, so he seems to be famous for Vories architecture. In addition, Omi Brothers’ core business is the Mentholatum architectural design, overseas pianos and other products trading. Based on his Christian beliefs, he invests his earnings in building schools and other things that benefit the community.
